DIVERSITY,
EQUITY &
INCLUSION
At the MPI, I am a member of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, as well as the Research Staff Committee.
Through these, I have (co-)organized the following workshops:
Pitching your research and yourself (November 2024)
Collaborating in Diverse Teams (November 2025)
Diversity in leadership (Coming soon)
I have additionally participated in the following trainings:
Implicit Bias (June 2024)
Creating an inclusive lab culture with a lab handbook (November 2023)
For our internship program, I developed an intern handbook and intern feedback form, to improve the integration and social safety of interns on our team.
OUTSIDE ACADEMIA
I was born in Ontario, Canada, but spent most of my childhood in the U.S. states of Texas and North Carolina. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I majored in Hispanic Linguistics and German Language and Culture. During this time, I spent two formative semesters studying abroad in Freiburg, Germany—a city that quickly became a second home. I later returned to Freiburg to pursue a Master’s degree in English Language Linguistics, and in 2023, I completed my Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Freiburg with a dissertation entitled “Individual differences and task effects in probabilistic language processing”.
In September 2023, I moved to Nijmegen to begin a position as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. Since then, I have learned to bike through the rain with a smile on my face, and have greatly enjoyed the academic environment in one of the world’s leading hubs for psycholinguistic research
Outside of academia, I enjoy making art—working with acrylics, linocut prints, and digital media—and exploring various crafts such as embroidery, knitting, and needlefelting. I also play Oldtime banjo in both Clawhammer and two-finger picking styles, a musical connection to my North Carolina roots. I'm happiest in the summertime, especially when I can be in or near the water, and I find a lot of joy in swimming. I'm an avid reader, particularly of queer literature, and have a strong interest in LGBTQ+ history.
